BACKGROUND: Pleural
tuberculosis in young people is considered to be due to primoinfection.
We analyze the direct relationship between trends on pleural and
general tuberculosis in our county.
METHODS:
We performed a retrospective study regarding pleural and general
tuberculosis annual rates in Bajo Deba County from January 1992 to
December 2012. Data before 1995 were not reliable in regard to general
tuberculosis and underestimation was expected. All pleural cases were
reliably recorded. Based on the relationship and trends observed in the
1995-2012 period, we try to find the true general tuberculosis annual
rate based on the pleural incidence in people aged under 40 years
following the Poisson models.
RESULTS: 169
of pleural tuberculosis cases and 773 cases of general tuberculosis
were recorded respectively. The descending trend regarding annual
incidence of general and pleural tuberculosis during the period
1995-2012 was statistically significant. The increment on general
tuberculosis in terms of annual incidence rate was 1.29 unit per each
unit incremented on pleural tuberculosis annual incidence rate in
people aged under 40 years. Following this model we estimated that the
mean number of cases of general tuberculosis before 1995 was 23 cases
more than those recorded.
CONCLUSION: We
check the potential utility of
pleural tuberculosis rate in young people as a good indicator of
general tuberculosis rate.
